7 Easy Steps to Make the Switch from Air Conditioning to Heating

how-to-switch-from-ac-to-heatingYou may have noticed it… the slight chill in the air in the mornings and evenings.  That is your subtle reminder that it’s time to start thinking about making the switch from cooling to heating.  In Colorado, that hint of winter can turn into a full-blown cold front before you know it.  With a small investment of time and attention, however, you won’t be caught unprepared.  Or, if you need assistance, contact a qualified HVAC professional to help you make that transition.

Here are a few steps you can take.

  1. 1. Clean Out Your Furnace

Carefully remove dirt, cobwebs and debris with a duster or vacuum.  This can eliminate potential fire hazards, as well as help your furnace run more efficiently.  Avoid touching the electrical wires though, as dislodging these connections can cause an electrical short.

  1. 2. Vacuum Heat Registers & Vents

Those dust bunnies are not just annoying; they can cause problems for your heating system.

  1. 3. Change Your Furnace Filter

This is probably the most economical step you can take to ensure that your furnace operates efficiently.  If you haven’t done it this summer (or longer) be sure to do it now, and once a month throughout the year.

  1. 4. Conduct a Visual Inspection

Turn on the furnace and visually inspect the system’s igniters. If they fail to light or seem sluggish, call a professional to replace worn-out burners or igniters that can compromise your system and increase the amount of energy your furnace uses.

  1. 5. Set Your Humidifier

Maintaining a humidity level of 40% is optimal in our cold, dry winters.  Doing so helps prevent dry skin, sinus irritation, and static shock.  While you’re at it, replace your humidifier filter, too, to cut down on respiratory irritation and keep you breathing easy.

  1. 6. Test the System

Before it gets too cold, switch on your heating system to make sure it is running smoothly.  This will allow you to address any problems before you really need that heat.

  1. 7. Get a Professional Check-up

Chances are it’s been awhile since a professional has inspected your furnace.  An annual furnace check-up can help you anticipate any major issues and keep your home nice and warm all winter.
