Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Furnace’s Maintenance Appointment

furnace-repair-timeJust as your car’s oil needs to be changed on a regular basis, your furnace needs regular maintenance as well.  Regular preventative maintenance helps keep your furnace operating efficiently and trouble-free and can increase its lifespan significantly. Regular maintenance can also limit repairs and reduce the cost to operate the furnace.  Pre-season maintenance is important as it can help avoid a system failure when you need it most, and it can help keep your energy bills in check.

There are some basic elements of furnace maintenance that you can do yourself, but you’ll need to call an HVAC servicing company for a full servicing.  Indoor Air Quality charges $119 for Furnace maintenance appointments.

Furnace Maintenance Checklist

In a typical service maintenance appointment, a skilled HVAC technician will perform the following maintenance tasks:

  • Inspect the ignition system, pilot, the burner assembly, the heat exchanger, heating elements, the flue, and the system controls
  • Clean the ignitor, pilot and burner assembly
  • Clean a permanent furnace filter, or replace a temporary one with a fresh filter
  • Check for gas leaks
  • Inspect electrical connections and check system for proper voltage and amp draw
  • Lubricate any moving parts of the furnace to ensure smooth operation

After a basic servicing, an HVAC tech will also turn the unit on to test its operation. This includes:

  • Ensuring the system starts properly
  • Listening for any abnormal sounds during operation
  • Making sure the thermostat is working properly
  • Checking that all elements of the furnace are working properly per the manufacturer’s specifications and testing all the furnace safeties

The best time to perform furnace maintenance is in the fall, before the cool weather kicks in. You don’t want to get stuck in cold weather while your furnace is being repaired!
