Understanding House Ventilation Options

Without proper house/home ventilation, pollutants in the home can accumulate, which can lead to both health problems and discomfort for you and your family members. Pollutants found in your carpets, furniture, bedding, wall paint and other belongings can cause headaches, skin condition and other problems. Your home’s natural heating and cooling systems do not address air circulation and air quality. Unless you’re opening a window (and this isn’t a year-round activity in Denver), you likely have an air quality problem.

Ventilation systems combine fresh, clean external air with your home’s internal air to reduce the amount of pollutants in your home. The following home ventilation options may improve your home’s air quality and your peace of mind.

Types of home ventilation:

Exhaust

Exhaust systems are relatively inexpensive and simple to install, which makes them an excellent affordable option. Since they work well in cold climates, some Denver residents may prefer these. However, they can accidentally bring outside pollutants into the home.

Supply

Supply systems are also fairly inexpensive and simple to install, which makes them an excellent affordable option. These minimize pollutants from outside, filter common pollutants including dust and pollen, provide more granular control than exhaust systems and also work well during hot weather. They also dehumidify internal air (another common place for pollutants) so you feel comfortable.

Energy/Heat Recovery Ventilators

While other types of ventilation increase home heating and cooling costs, these reduce heating and cooling costs. However, they do cost more to install and Denver residents must also get freeze or frost protection for these systems, which further increases the installation costs. The systems also require more maintenance than other home ventilation systems. You may choose a window-mounted or a centralized unit.

The size of your home, your comfort level and your preference to pay more up front and lower utility bills (or pay less upfront and accept higher utility bills) can all factor into your decision of home ventilation. Our HVAC contractors have experience working with all of these types of home ventilation.
