Why is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling?

Why is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling?Stepping into your nice cool home on a hot summer day is a wonderful feeling.  That is, of course, unless your air conditioner is not working properly.  Before you get too hot under the collar, there are some things you can do to remedy the situation.

  1. Check the thermostat.

Start with the simplest solution.  While it may not seem likely, it is possible that your thermostat may have accidentally been switched to “Off” or “Heat” instead of “Cool.”  Or, the temperature setting may be too high.

  1. Check the air filter.

Replacing the air filter is one of those routine maintenance items that is often neglected, but has a big impact on the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems.  Air filters are inexpensive and installing a new one can be an easy fix to your air conditioning troubles.

  1. Clean your air conditioner unit.

This is another routine maintenance task that is often overlooked.  While you can clear brush and debris away from the unit yourself, you should enlist a professional to clean the unit itself as part of an annual maintenance visit.

  1. Check the electricity going to your unit.

Sensor switches that have turned off could indicate a problem with your air conditioner.  Or, if the circuit breaker is tripping regularly, this can be a sign of a larger problem with the air conditioner or the wiring from the circuit breaker. Consult a professional in this case.

If none of the above restores your air conditioner’s function, your A/C professional can check for low refrigerant or more serious causes, such as a malfunctioning condenser fan or compressor.
