It’s a classic story. Some people in your family want the temperature to be hotter than it is, while others wish it was colder. A certain degree of uneven temperatures may be unavoidable. But if you get this a lot, it could actually be a sign that you have an issue with your HVAC system.
Your home could have some hot spots and some cold spots even if you have a great system. Here are six things that could be causing uneven temperatures.
Your thermostat senses the temperature in your home and uses that reading to tell your HVAC system how hot or cold it should run. If you place your thermostat in a location that’s commonly hotter or colder than the rest of your home, it could cause uneven or inaccurate heating and cooling.
If your furnace has a hard time keeping some parts of your home warm, air leaks could be the culprit. Gaps around windows and doors can cause the hot air that your furnace creates to leave the room as soon as it enters it, resulting in cold spots.
Air ducts transport the hot or cold air that your system produces throughout your home. When they aren’t sealed properly or have cracks, the air they carry can leak out before making it to its destination. This can also cause hot and cold spots in your home.
It’s also possible you’ve got the wrong HVAC size. Systems that are too large can cycle on and off very quickly, which may cause some rooms not to get as much air as they need.
Units that are too small can cause the same problem for different reasons. These systems may lack the power to cool or heat every room in your home.
This is the easiest solution to uneven temperatures and it’s also one of the most common reasons why they occur. When a room’s air vents are closed or blocked, it won’t receive the same hot or cold air that the rest of your home receives, resulting in an uneven temperature.
Thankfully, fixing this problem is as easy as opening the closed air vent or removing whatever is in front of it to unblock the vent.
We recommend that you change your air filters every 1-3 months – especially when you’re using your system a lot. The reason for this isn’t to make you spend more money and do more work unnecessarily.
When you have a dirty filter, it reduces the flow of air into your home. That can cause many issues with temperature regulation – not to mention other problems like air flow blockages that can lead to mold and mildew.
