How Much Does an Air Conditioner Cost?

How Much Does an Air Conditioner Cost?A new central air conditioner, particularly one installed for the first time in an existing home, is a major investment.  Learning what goes into the cost is a wise first step.  Advances in technology have made today’s air conditioners 30% more energy efficient (and, consequently, more cost effective) than they were just 15 years ago.    In order to derive the greatest benefit, however, there are several things to consider which impact the cost of the unit as well as the cost to operate it.

Since size equates to cost (the larger the unit the more expensive it is), choosing the right size air conditioner is critical.  The size refers to how much heat the unit can remove in one hour, rather than the unit’s physical dimensions, and is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and tons.  One ton equals 12,000 BTUs.  When determining the correct size to purchase, however, there are several factors to consider.

  1. The Size of Your Home

A smaller home can get by with a smaller A/C unit, but don’t make that judgment based solely on square footage.  Basements naturally stay cooler than above ground living space and may allow you to get by with less cooling capacity, while upper floors retain more heat and may require greater capacity.

  1. The Direction Your House Faces

Here in Denver, we love our sunshine and southern exposure is an excellent source of passive solar energy all year long.  In the summer months, however, it can create excessive heat and raise your A/C costs.  Conversely, north-facing homes, while typically colder in winter, also stay cooler in summer.

  1. The Number and Location of Windows

Similar to your homes orientation, how many windows you have that let in direct sunlight for much of the day can affect the size and cost of the unit you will need.  Heat-reflecting film, blinds, or shades on sun-facing windows can reduce the amount of heat generated inside your home.

  1. Insulation

Making sure your home is properly insulated before sizing your air conditioner will allow you to make a more economical choice. Regularly replacing your furnace filters will also increase efficiency by maximizing the airflow through the system.

Other factors that affect cost are related to installation, for example, whether you need new ductwork or additional wiring.  An experienced, reputable A/C professional will help you determine exactly what you need.
