How to Change Your Air Conditioner’s Filter in 5 Easy Steps

How to Change Your AC Filter

If you want your air conditioner to last as long as possible, then make sure you keep its filter changed regularly. In fact, you should check your filter monthly, and then change it if it is getting dirty. This task isn’t difficult, and it will help improve the life span and efficiency of your AC unit.

To change your filter, here’s what you need to do:

 1. Locate the filter

In order to change your AC filter, you need to find it. The air filter is in the return air duct. Remove the cover on this duct and you’ll find your filter.

 2. Determine the size

You need to purchase an air filter the same size as the current one. Measure the length and height of the filter. If it has any measurable depth, measure this as well.

3. Buy a new filter

Once you have the size, buying a new filter isn’t too difficult. You can get one at your local home improvement store for just a few dollars.

4. Replace the filter

Remove the old filter, and then install the new filter the same way. The filter will usually have arrows on it that point in the direction of air flow. Make sure you install it in the right direction. Then, replace the cover on the duct.

 5. Check for proper airflow

Make sure your air conditioner is working properly by turning it on and checking for air flow. If you can’t feel the air flow, use a piece of paper placed over the return duct cover. It should be sucked to the cover. If it is, you installed the filter correctly.

This job only takes a few minutes, and it makes a big difference in how efficient your air conditioner is. Now that you know how to replace an air conditioner’s air filter, go and check yours. If it’s in need of a change, you know how to do it.
