Top 6 Reasons to Replace Your Air Conditioner

How do you know when it is time to replace your air conditioner? There are several factors to consider, including how much energy your current system uses and how often it needs repairs.

Here are the top 6 reasons experts give for replacing your old air conditioner.

1. Age

The air conditioner is more than 10-15 years old. Energy Star recommends upgrading to an energy-efficient unit if your current central air conditioner is 10 or more years old. However, many HVAC technicians say they typically recommend replacing the unit if it is 15 years or older. Use the 5,000 rule: Multiply the age of the equipment by the repair cost. If that exceeds $5,000, then replace the unit. If less, go ahead and repair it.

2. Efficiency

If your air conditioner is inefficient, you are wasting money unnecessarily on energy bills, and probably not achieving the comfort level and reliability you desire. Today’s models are far more efficient performers than units from 10 years ago. While buying a new system is an investment, with rebates and lower monthly bills you could end up saving a significant amount of money and enjoy a more comfortable home.

3. Expensive repairs

Weigh the cost of repairs against the value of your current system and the cost of a new unit. If the amount you would spend on the repair covers a sizable portion of a new air conditioner, it may be time for a replacement. Also consider the other factors such as age and energy efficiency to get a complete picture.

4. Frequent breakdowns

Even inexpensive repairs can add up if they happen frequently, not to mention the inconvenience associated with getting the air conditioner fixed and being without one.

5. R22 refrigerant

If your air conditioner needs R22 refrigerant, also known as freon, this can indicate a leak. Coolant leaks mean the compressor will likely go out and it is time for a new air conditioner. In addition, R22 is being phased out in favor of R410A as part of energy-saving measures instituted by the Federal government. R22 costs have increased considerably, and will keep going up as supply will decrease every year.  That alone may cause you to consider replacement.

6. Comfort

If your home isn’t comfortable — there are hot spots or your home doesn’t stay cool — your air conditioner may be aging or improperly sized and will need to be replaced.
